We just started a kids care club in Hurricane for kids to volunteer. Our first service project was today at the Library here in Hurricane! June is National Hunger Awareness Month and it is also Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month, so we combined those two themes and decided to make healthy snacks for children in need. Roberta Cameron came and spoke to the kids about the Hurricane Food Bank and things that are normally donated and given to families. We had everyone bring some food to donate and had the kids decorate brown lunch bags to put the healthy snacks into. Only five different families were able to come, but we ended up making seventeen bags full of food. Everyone was so generous with their contributions. Roberta told the kids that the children needing food do not usually get these types of food so it will be a "treat" for them. We had some fresh fruit, packaged fruit, Quaker Granola Bars (a whole bunch), peanut butter, raisins, and some fruit gummy treats.

After we finished decorating the sacks and stuffing them full of food, some of us were able to go over to the Food Bank with Roberta and deliver the bags. There was an empty box waiting for us to put the sacks in ready to be weighed. There was 20lbs worth of food we brought. She had a box full of food they normally give to families. She let the kids go through the box to see all the items. They weigh everything. Some families will get a 50lb box full of food or maybe a 100lb box full of food depending on the size of family.
