Today we met at the ball fields to clean up fireworks and garbage left over from Saturday. I forgot my camera so the visual will have to be entirely imaginary. Hopefully my writing skills will do justice.
We met at 8:00am. It was REALLY early but at least it wasn't hot yet. The city worker gave us a couple big orange bags and sent us to work on the middle and upper ball fields.
Girls from the "girls home" were already there and had cleaned up along the street, Stout park and were working on the lower field. After they finished there they drove over to the other baseball field.
Kerry and her kids, Allison, McKay and Grant came to help. Allison and McKay were great helpers--even Grant picked up some garbage and only sometimes kept it to play with. Claire brought her two boys William and Taylor. They were great helpers as well. My girls, Naomi, Layla and Mazie did a super job, although Mazie kept getting tired and laying on the grass.
We started the middle field first and were very impressed that people actually cleaned up after themselves. There didn't seem to be a lot of garbage over there. When we made it to the upper field we changed our minds. There was a lot of fireworks and other garbage all over the place. At least we were useful and could help our community out by cleaning up. One of our orange garbage bags got pretty full.
When we finished I gave all the kids a popsicle.
Charis and her kids, Jaeden and Cedes came toward the end and sorted all the garbage into recyclable and non-recyclable items. It took awhile but half of that garbage ended up being recyclable and we drove it over to the bins across the street. We were out of there by 9:30am and that was just perfect because it was starting to get a little warm by then.
Hopefully all the people who helped cleanup will have learned the importance of cleaning up after ourselves. I know I sure did.
